Charles Dickens and society

Charles Dickens is one of the best-known English writers of the nineteenth century. He was born in Portsmouth in 1812 and spent part of his childhood in London. Many of his novels describe poor children and families who lived in difficult conditions. In Oliver Twist, Dickens shows the life of an orphan who grows up in a workhouse. The writer wanted his readers to notice social problems and think about the way poor people were treated. His stories are still read because they combine memorable characters with important questions about society.

Why classics still matter

Classic English novels are often connected with the past, but they can still speak to modern readers. A novel written two hundred years ago may describe social rules that no longer exist, yet its characters can face problems that people understand today. They may worry about friendship, family expectations, personal choice or the wish to be accepted. Modern film adaptations sometimes change the setting or the appearance of the characters, but they usually keep the central conflict. This helps young viewers enter the world of the original book. Reading the novel afterwards can be especially interesting because it allows readers to compare the director's interpretation with the writer's ideas. In this way, a classic work becomes not only a historical document but also a starting point for discussion.
  1. Why can a novel written two hundred years ago still be interesting to modern readers?

  2. What do modern film adaptations usually keep even when they change the setting?

  3. How can a film help young people read the original novel?

  4. Why is it useful to compare a film adaptation with the original novel?
