Слайд 6. Fun Facts about the Author: Jerry Craft
1. He never liked reading as a kid.
Jerry Craft was a “draw-er,” not a reader. He loved Marvel Comics, but his teachers thought comics would “rot his brain.” He didn’t read a book for fun until he was an adult.
2. New Kid is the first graphic novel to win the Newbery Medal.
In 2020, New Kid won the John Newbery Medal — the most prestigious award in children’s literature. No graphic novel had ever won it before.
3. The story is based on his own life.
Craft grew up in Washington Heights and attended a private school in Riverdale — just like Jordan. He wrote New Kid because he wanted Black kids to see themselves as “regular kids,” not just characters in “gritty” stories about survival.
