Living Beyond Earth
Living in space is difficult because astronauts cannot depend on natural conditions. On Earth, people receive air, water and food from the environment, but a spacecraft must provide everything. Modern space stations recycle water and produce oxygen. Astronauts also grow small plants, although this requires careful control of light, temperature and moisture. In the future, scientists hope to create larger space habitats. These habitats may help people stay in orbit for many years and prepare for missions to the Moon and Mars.
Why must a spacecraft provide air, water and food?
What do astronauts grow on modern space stations?
What may larger space habitats help people do in the future?
