Why Do People Attend a Pow Wow?
A pow wow is a gathering where Indigenous people share music, dance, clothing and stories. Although each community has its own traditions, many pow wows welcome visitors who come to learn respectfully. Dancers may spend months preparing their regalia, because every colour, material and decoration can express family history or a personal connection with nature. During a competition pow wow, judges assess the dancers' rhythm, energy and ability to follow the drum. However, not every pow wow is a competition. Some gatherings are held mainly to celebrate community, remember ancestors and introduce younger people to traditions that might otherwise be forgotten.
Why may dancers spend months preparing their regalia?
Because the clothing is rented from the organisers.
Because its details can express personal or family connections.
Because visitors are required to make costumes.
Because judges choose the colours before the event.
What do judges assess at a competition pow wow?
The dancers' rhythm, energy and connection with the drum.
The number of visitors at the gathering.
The age of each dancer's costume.
The history of the community's ancestors.
Are all pow wows competitions?
What might happen if younger people are not introduced to traditions?

5. The meaning of regalia
Прочитайте текст и ответьте на вопросы на английском языке. Для открытых вопросов дайте краткий ответ.
More Than Clothing
For many dancers, regalia is much more than attractive clothing. A dancer may receive part of it from an elder, make another part with relatives or add new details after an important event. Feathers, ribbons and beadwork can show links with a family, a region or a particular tradition. This does not mean that every item has one fixed meaning for all communities. Visitors should not touch regalia or feathers without permission. They should also avoid treating the dancers as performers in a show, because the event may have spiritual and cultural importance. A respectful visitor watches carefully, follows the instructions of the hosts and asks questions at an appropriate moment.
Who may help a dancer create regalia?
Only professional designers.
Elders and relatives.
Only visitors from other countries.
Judges from a competition.
Why can the meaning of an item differ between communities?
Because every item is made of plastic.
Because traditions and cultural connections are not identical.
Because dancers change their names.
Because visitors choose the meaning.
What should visitors do before touching regalia?
Why should visitors not treat dancers simply as performers?

Daniel Learns to Be a Respectful Visitor
When Daniel first heard about a pow wow, he expected to see a colourful concert. Before going, he read the visitor information on the organisers' website. He learnt that some dances could not be photographed and that people should not enter the dancing area. At the event, Daniel noticed that visitors were welcome, but they were expected to listen to announcements and respect the space around the dancers. He wanted to ask a dancer about a headdress, yet he waited until a suitable moment and asked politely. The dancer explained that the headdress had been made by several members of her family. Daniel left with a more thoughtful understanding of the event: it was not simply entertainment, but also a way for communities to maintain and share their heritage.
