A Night in the Forest
Last summer, Ben and his aunt visited a subtropical wilderness in an airboat. It was a fast-paced experience and an exciting way to explore a place that was off the beaten path. They wanted to observe rare and endangered species up close from a comfortable perspective. The guide explained the boundaries of the park and showed them an incredible array of wildlife. He also gave everyone insect repellent and a perfect mesh hat because many mosquitoes lived near the water.
In the afternoon, the airboat pulled in near the ground beside a swamp. Ben spotted a small reptile, but he stepped back and fell into soft mud. He did not panic. He lay flat, reached for a branch and pulled himself out. Then he crawled out of the mud and shook his clothes. A mosquito flew into his mouth, but he did not swallow it. Near the path, the group saw a scorpion. The guide said that its sting was poisonous and could be fatal, so everybody moved away. The scorpion did not run away; it hid under a leaf.
At night, Ben and his aunt stayed in a small shelter. They wanted to survive in the forest, so they followed the guide’s safety rules. Ben did not get into trouble again. In the morning, the group made an escape from the swamp and returned by airboat. Nobody climbed near the cliff, and nobody had to hide. Ben remembered the adventure as an incredible chance to explore nature.

On Sunday morning, Maya and her cousin Leo went on a survival trip in a large forest. They carried a map, a compass, a first-aid kit, two bottles of water and a small knife. Their teacher had told them to stay together and mark the path with small pieces of bright string. After two hours, dark clouds appeared and heavy rain began. The children found a dry place under a group of tall trees, but they did not make a fire because the ground was wet and they had no adult with them. Leo wanted to walk towards a distant light, while Maya checked the compass and suggested staying where they were. They blew a whistle three times and waited. Soon, a park ranger heard them and showed them the safe way back to the visitor centre. Maya and Leo were tired, but they were not hurt. The text does not say whether they had visited the forest before.

A Night in the Forest Last Saturday, thirteen-year-old Ben and his older sister Lucy went camping in Pine Forest. They arrived in the afternoon and chose a place near a small stream. Before it became dark, they put up a tent, collected some dry branches and checked their map. Their parents had taught them never to walk far from the camp after sunset. They cooked soup on a small camping stove because making a fire was not allowed in that part of the forest.
During the night, Ben woke up because he heard branches breaking. Lucy stayed calm and turned on their torch. They did not leave the tent. After a few minutes, they understood that the sound came from a deer near the stream. In the morning, they found fresh footprints, but they did not see the animal. Before going home, they put all their rubbish in a bag and made sure that the place was clean. The text does not say how long the walk home took.
