Volunteering Beyond Borders
Across the world, volunteering is changing as communities face problems that cannot be solved by one organisation alone. In Kenya, an international project called Green Neighbours connects local residents, university students and visitors who want to restore damaged sections of the coast. The volunteers do not simply plant mangrove trees according to a fixed plan. First, they interview fishers and examine old photographs to find out which areas have lost the most vegetation. Then they compare this information with data collected by researchers. As a result, each group chooses a different part of the coastline and develops a plan that suits local conditions. The project has produced unexpected benefits. Mangroves protect the shore from storms and provide shelter for young fish, but the discussions between volunteers and residents have also changed the way the community sees environmental work. Some fishers, who were initially doubtful, now help students monitor the new plants. The organisers believe that this cooperation is more important than the number of trees planted in a single year. They are therefore planning to create an online training course so that former volunteers can support similar projects in other countries. However, they insist that the course will not replace local knowledge: every new team will have to adapt the methods to its own community.
What makes the Green Neighbours project different from a simple tree-planting campaign?
Which two types of information do the volunteers use before choosing an area to restore?
Why did some fishers change their attitude towards the project?
Which statement best expresses the organisers’ main idea?

Choosing the Right Project
When Leo decided to volunteer abroad, he first wanted to work with children. However, the projects he found required previous teaching experience, which he did not have. One organisation offered him a place at an animal rescue centre, but the programme involved very long working days and expensive accommodation. Leo then discovered a coastal conservation project. Volunteers were expected to collect data, speak to tourists and help repair small boats. The work was physically demanding, but accommodation was provided and the project included training. Leo chose the coastal project because it matched his interest in science and did not require professional teaching skills. Before leaving, he completed an online course about local marine life.
Why could Leo not choose most of the projects involving children?
Which problem did the animal rescue project have?
Why did Leo choose the coastal conservation project?
