Peter the Great and Modernisation
Peter the Great is often remembered as a ruler who wanted Russia to become a major European power. He travelled through Europe and observed shipbuilding, military organisation and public administration. When he returned, he introduced reforms in several areas. The army and navy were reorganised, new schools were opened, and the city of St Petersburg was built on the Baltic coast. These changes were costly and sometimes unpopular. However, they helped Russia take part more actively in European politics. Peter’s reforms did not transform every part of society, but they created institutions that influenced the country for many years.
